Horacio Quiroga

    December 31, 1878 – February 19, 1937

Horacio Quiroga was an Uruguayan novelist and, above all, a short story writer. His stories, often set in jungle environments, employ the supernatural and the bizarre to depict the struggle for survival between humans and animals. He excelled in portraying mental illness and hallucinatory states, leaving a distinct mark on Latin American literature. His influence can be seen in the magic realism of Gabriel García Márquez and the postmodern surrealism of Julio Cortázar.
