Kurt Held

    November 4, 1897 – December 9, 1959

Kurt Kläber, who wrote under the pseudonym Kurt Held, was a Jewish writer and communist displaced from Germany during World War II. Encouraged by his wife, Lisa Tetzner, Kläber focused his literary efforts on children, whom he viewed as the primary victims of war, class struggle, and injustice. His narratives realistically depicted the world of children, embedding them with potent moral messages. These stories, often centering on working-class children, achieved considerable success and continue to resonate with readers for their enduring themes.
