Richard S. Shaver

Richard Sharpe Shaver was an American writer and artist who gained significant notoriety in the post-World War II era. He became known for his controversial stories published in science fiction magazines, where he claimed personal experience with an ancient, sinister civilization residing beneath the earth. Promoted as "The Shaver Mystery" by his editor and publisher, these writings, presented as fiction, were asserted by both to be fundamentally true. His unique voice and unsettling narratives continue to intrigue readers.

Armchair fiction presents extra large paperback editions of the best in classic science fiction novels. Well, here we are with book six of our “Shaver Mystery” series. There’s no question that the stories and articles included in this edition are as wild as anything Dick Shaver ever wrote—so you won’t be disappointed! First off is an editorial from the July, 1958 issue of Fantastic. That entire issue was dedicated to the Shaver Mystery, featuring a new Shaver novel, “The Dream Makers” (included here) two articles about the alleged “truth” of Dick Shaver’s wild claims (included here), as well as an article about how to decipher Shaver’s “Mantong” alphabet (also included here). From the Ray Palmer era we’ve also thrown in an additional vintage Shaver Mystery tale, “The Land of Kui,” which dates back to the December, 1946 issue of Amazing Stories. We never thought we’d be doing more than a handful of Shaver Mystery volumes, but the response to our first five editions has been so good (some might say so disturbing) that we have plans for at least (heaven help us) ten total volumes, perhaps more. So kick back and loosen up the chains of your imagination—you’ll need to—as you enjoy the wild and woolly worlds of Richard S. Shaver.

Shaver is another installation of some of the most bizarre science fiction ever written. This latest volume contains two of Shaver’s most outrageous novels, “Thought Records of Lemuria” and “The Masked World.” Shaver’s “true” stories caused quite a controversy when they first appeared by in the 1940s. But the question remains…was Shaver telling the truth, or was he just a literary madman. Reading his fiction is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. He and Ed Wood surely would have been the best of friends. A must for all aficionados of the truly weird. These Shaver Mystery tales are presented in paperback for the first time.

Welcome back to the world of Richard Sharpe Shaver. In this volume you’ll get to meet an ancient race of god-like Norwegian folks, frozen while eating dinner thousands of years ago, who are unthawed just in time to finish their dinner and unintentionally help the Nazi’s conquer Norway—sort of. There’s also Butch, a disillusioned lifer, stuck in prison, who along with some of his prison buddies figure out a way to escape from prison by dreaming. Yes…dreaming. Shaver will explain. Then there’s Ru-Non, a really beautiful but cruel female alien, whose race has been looting planets for slaves for centuries. She finds a nice pocket of potential slaves to pick from in a monstrously big cavern found more or less underneath Yankee Stadium. Sounds pretty cool, huh? And if all this isn’t enough to sell you on Richard S. Shaver we just don’t know what will… These Shaver Mystery tales are presented in paperback for the first time.
