Kniha, kterou společně napsaly dvě zajímavé, ve světě uznávané a v Čechách dosud poměrně málo známé osobnosti, by se dala asi nejvýstižněji nazvat jako vědecká autobiografie. Je poměrně vyváženým kompromisem mezi klasickou autobiografií popisující chronologicky běh života a – na druhé straně – analýzou vlastního díla a sociálního či politického kontextu doby. Před čtenářem se paralelně chronologicky odvíjejí životy obou autorů, přičemž se zároveň dovídá mnohé o americkém intelektuálním prostředí, jednotlivých osobnostech a – zejména historiografických – školách druhé poloviny dvacátého století.

Der berühmte Kreis von deutschen und tschechischen Prager Schriftstellern, meist jüdischer Herkunft, prägte Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts das Geistesleben Westeuropas. Die besondere Rolle, die Frauen in der Geschichte dieser ethnisch vielfältigen Kulturlandschaft in und um Prag zukam, fand bislang allerdings kaum Beachtung. Basierend auf umfangreichen autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen und Briefen aus der Hand von Frauen und ergänzt um eine ausführliche historische Einleitung, trägt dieses Buch dazu bei, das bisher dominierende Bild zurechtzurücken.

For many centuries Prague has exerted a particular fascination because of its beauty and therichness of its culture and history. Its famous group of German and Czech writers of mostly Jewish extraction in the earlier part of this century has deeply influenced Western culture.However, little attention has so far been paid to the roles of women in the history of thisethnically diverse area in around Prague. Based on largely autobiographical writings and letters by women and enhanced by extensive historical introduction, this book redresses a serious imbalance. The vivid and often moving portraits, which emerge from the varied material used bythe author, offer fascinating and new insights into the social and cultural history of this region.
