Jorge Amado napsal knihu v roce 1948 pro svého syna k prvním narozeninám. Text se ztratil a poprvé byl vydán knižně teprve roku 1976 poté, co ho spisovatelův syn objevil. Příběh o lásce mourovatého kocoura a mladé vlaštovičky.

Jorge Amado escreveu O Gato Malhado e a Andorinha Sinhá, em 1948, para o seu filho João Jorge, quando este completou um ano de idade. O texto andou perdido, e só em 1978 conheceu a sua primeira edição, depois de ter sido recuperado pelo seu filho e levado a Carybé para o ilustrar.
