Las moradas del castillo interior, las Moradas, es la tercera obra que aparece en la edición de 1588 preparada por fray Luis de León, después del Libro de la vida y Camino de perfección. Lo escribe a petición del padre Jerónimo Gracián. Estando en Toledo, el 28 de mayo de 1577, en una charla sobre complicados temas de espiritualidad, ella le recuerda quejosa que esas cuestiones estaban muy bien re\$ ejadas en su Libro de la vida; pero no puede hacerse con una copia y además la Inquisición tiene la copia de la princesa de Éboli, que había denunciado a la santa. Entonces el padre Jerónimo Gracián le pidió que hiciera memoria y escribiera otro libro con lo que recordara de aquel y algunas cosas más. Se puso a la tarea el 2 de junio de 1577, a los cuatro días de que se lo pidiese el padre Gracián. Teresa de Jesús escribe con \$ uidez, con rapidez, como si estuviera conversando; pero en octubre se produce una interrupción porque tiene muchas di( cultades a la hora de escribir: viajes, dolor de cabeza. Se detiene en las Quintas moradas, cap. III; retomará la redacción a ( nales de octubre en el capítulo IV de las Quintas moradas para terminar a ( nales de este mes. Lo acaba en el monasterio de san José de Ávila el día 29 de noviembre del mismo año. Las Moradas es una la obra que re\$ eja la cima de su evolución espiritual, es su última lección, que completa el mensaje de las obras anteriores.
