This volume for the first time examines the women in and around Duchamp's life and work, focusing on contacts and convergences from Duchamp's youth up until his death in 1968. Some of the women geathered here were central figures in early twenty-century modernism, while others were part of fascinating intellectual and artistc networks that were, until now, in need of discovery. "Duchamp and the Women" introduces readers to the cultural circles and artistic movements in which the women presented were active and played a formative role. Marcel Duchamp's disguises and countless photographic self-portrayals, and his humorous commentaries on art, the art industry, art criticism, and art history, are legendary in word and image. Less well known is a Marcel Duchamp who, with great empathy and strategic awareness, embraced the cause of the artists in his contemporary cultural environment: as curator of exhibitions from the early 1910s to his death in 1968, as juror and consultant for some of the most important collections, museums, and galleries of modern art. The volume outlines nearly seventy exhibitions, supplemented by recent research findings, and illustrates Duchamp’s close cooperation with leading figures of his time, including Louise and Walter Conrad Arensberg, Katherine S. Dreier, Francis Picabia, Sidney and Harriet Janis as well as Andre´ Breton, Julien Levy, and Peggy Guggenheim.
In 1967, Peter Roehr and Paul Maenz curated the exhibition 'Serial Formations' at University of Frankfurt?s studio gallery, one of the first ever exhibitions on Minimal Art in Germany. Within the framework of the exhibition series 'Minimalism in Germany', launched in 2005, Daimler Art Collection is attempting to re-stage this historically significant presentation. At that time, it had comprehensively summarized current international minimalist trends, and juxtaposed them with positions by German artists. The selection criterion for the 62 works in total by 48 artists was the principle of serial order as a visual aspect of images and objects. The concepts they were based on, however, could be quite diverse and even contradictory. The European Zero movement was represented, as well as American Minimal and Concept Art, aspects of Nouveau Réalisme, Pop and Op Art ? Paul Maenz wrote in the accompanying catalog, 'the ambition of 'Serielle Formationen' was to inform and to identify the differences between seemingly similar art phenomena'. The unique feature of the publication on the current exhibition in Berlin is the complete reprint of the, now very sought-after, original catalog, which is an excellent example of early conceptual book design
Duchamp erfindet den Kurator Marcel Duchamp hat die Ausstellungspraxis zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil seines Werkes gemacht. Kuratorische Gesten und Konzepte, welche die Inszenierung seiner Arbeiten bestimmten und es ihm erlaubten, sich von kanonischen Festlegungen des Künstlertypus zu entfernen; fotografische Dokumentationen und Veröffentlichungen seiner New Yorker Ateliers; Themen, Beiträge und Layoutentwürfe für Kunstmagazine; seine Tätigkeit als Berater, Juror und inszenierender Kurator für Ausstellungen im Kontext des amerikanischen Modernismus, Dada und des Surrealismus; der eminente Einfluss auf wichtige Privatsammlungen seiner Zeit – alle denkbaren Aspekte des Kuratierens, Ausstellens und Sammelns haben im Werk von Duchamp eine qualitativ neue künstlerische Dimension gewonnen. Parallel zu Duchamps dezidierter Distanzierung von gegebenen Strukturen künstlerischen Arbeitens näherte er sich so einer heute durchaus gängigen Vorstellung der kuratorischen Praxis als ästhetisches Medium. Er war, so die zugespitzte These des Symposiums und der hier vorliegenden Publikation, einer der ersten ›Künstler-Kuratoren‹ und hat damit die Rezeption seines eigenen Werkes und die kunsthistorischen Entwicklungen der Ausstellungspraxis entscheidend beeinflusst. Den mehrdeutigen Wahrnehmungsweisen und offenen Deutungsperspektiven seines eigenen Werkes hat Duchamp durch Inszenierung, Reproduktion und Multiplikation seiner und der Arbeit anderer eine neue konzeptuelle Richtung gegeben, mit der sich eine Wende für die zeitgenössische Kunst bestimmen lässt. Prinzipien der Ausstellungspraxis wurden nun zu entscheidenden Faktoren der Werkkonstitution. Der Band versammelt die Beiträge eines Symposiums der Daimler Art Collection (25./26.4.2017) und dürfte die erste substanzielle Publikation zu diesem Thema sein, er versammelt acht Essays ausgewiesener Autorinnen und Autoren, die den Werkstatus der vielfältigen kuratorischen Gesten Duchamps analysieren.
Die Publikation repräsentiert Schwerpunkte der Daimler Kunst Sammlung von der klassischen Moderne über abstrakte Avantgarden bis in die aktuelle internationale Gegenwartskunst. Der Akzent liegt auf dialogischen Bezugnahmen und diskursiven Verschränkungen der Werke untereinander. Kunstgeschichte wird nicht im Sinne von 'Erfindung' und 'Progression' betrachtet, sondern als ein argumentativer Zusammenschluss von Bildern in temporären Kontexten vorgestellt. Die 1977 gegründete Daimler Kunst Sammlung zählt heute zu den bedeutenden europäischen Unternehmenssammlungen mit internationalem Renommee. Sie umfasst rund 1800 Werke, ihr Schwerpunkt liegt im Bereich der abstrakten Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der vorliegende dritte Band zur Daimler Kunst Sammlung präsentiert Malerei, Grafik sowie Objektkunst und dokumentiert die Ausstellungen der Sammlung in Berlin, Wien und Buenos Aires in den Jahren 2009 und 2010.
At the spectacular Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart, designed by architects van Berkel & Bos, an equally spectacular art event is taking place on the occasion of Mercedes-Benz's 125th anniversary. The Daimler Art Collection is presenting itself to the public with 250 works spanning the classic modern period to international contemporary art. Without having to move a single car, works by artists such as Adolf Hölzel, Andy Warhol, and Sylvie Fleury have been integrated into the automobile display. Tracing the path of the regular museum tour, the publication assembles all of the aspects of the exhibition in magazine format, including pictures, essays, and biographies of the artists. Mit der Vergabe des in Südafrika wie international hoch angesehenen Mercedes-Benz Award for South African Art and Culture engagierte sich die Daimler Kunst Sammlung mehr als zehn Jahre für südafrikanische Künstler, Musiker, Architekten, Autoren und Modemacher. Die Gewinner der verschiedenen kulturellen Sparten waren seither vielfach weltweit in Galerien und Projekten, auf Biennalen oder im Rahmen der Documenta zu sehen und zählen zu den avancierten Positionen zeitgenössischer Kunst und Kultur. In einer dialogisch angelegten Präsentation werden aktuelle performative, konzeptuelle und abstrakte Tendenzen der zeitgenössischen südafrikanischen Kunst ausgewählten Werken der Daimler Kunst Sammlung gegenübergestellt. Die international orientierte Daimler Kunst Sammlung konzentriert sich auf abstrakte Avantgarden und reduzierte Tendenzen vom Bauhaus bis in die aktuelle Gegenwartskunst. \"I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals," Roland Barthes famously said. "I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object." For evidence of this dictum, one need look no further than Cars, the 1986-87 series of silkscreen prints and paintings that Andy Warhol (1928-1987) executed at the behest of Mercedes-Benz in honor of the esteemed German automaker's centenary. This volume of the same name collects Warhol's silkscreens together with the work of three other artists featuring Mercedes-Benz automobiles: drawings and airbrush paintings by Robert Longo (born 1953), videos by Sylvie Fleury (born 1961) and Vincent Szarek (born 1973), who takes design elements from the Mercedes-Benz SLR as the starting point for the sculptures depicted here.
