Socrates

Socrates remains an enigma, much as he was in his own lifetime. Though he penned nothing himself, he is counted among the handful of thinkers who irrevocably altered the landscape of philosophy. All knowledge of him is secondhand and often contested, yet his trial and execution by Athenian democracy form the foundational myth of academic philosophy, his influence radiating far beyond its borders and through every age. His life serves as a paradigm for the philosophic life and, more broadly, for how one ought to live, a strange legacy for one who urged independent thought and was convicted of impiety.
