Nach Joachim Heinrich Campe wurde das Campe Gymnasium Holzminden benannt. Für den Holzmindener Künstler Karl Cohnen war dies ein guter Anlass, um das Werk zu illustrieren. Seine etwa 100 Illustrationen finden eine ganz eigene grafische Sprache und verdeutlichen vor allem den Gegensatz von Zivilisation, Natur und Mythologie. Da es sich bei dem 1779 von Campe veröffentlichtem Buch „Robinson der Jüngere, zur angenehmen und nützlichen Unterhaltung für Kinde“ um eine sehr freie Übersetzung mit sehr zeitspezifischen pädagogischen Hinweisen handelt, wurde hier auf eine mehr am Original orientierte Übersetzung von Karl Altmüller aus dem Jahre 1869 zurückgegriffen.

Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer), a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. Despite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. It is generally seen as a contender for the first English novel. Before the end of 1719, the book had already run through four editions, and it has gone on to become one of the most widely published books in history, spawning so many imitations, not only in literature but also in film, television and radio, that its name is used to define a genre, the Robinsonade.

Nei quasi trent'anni trascorsi lontano da ogni forma di civiltà, Robinson costruisce, coltiva, caccia, assegna nomi, ripercorrendo in sostanza la storia del genere umano. La forza di suggestione di quelle pagine è tale da aver oscurato tutto il resto, e forse pochi saprebbero dire, a dispetto della notorietà della vicenda, che cosa avvenne prima e dopo il fatidico naufragio. Dall'universo letterario Robinson Crusoe è passato rapidamente a quello del mito, e tuttavia questo non esaurisce il progetto dell'opera. Robinson, infatti, protagonista di una biografia in due tempi, fa ritorno nelle Ulteriori avventure alla sua isola di Speranza, di cui fu già king and lord. L'inclinazione a riprendere il mare lo porterà fino in Cina, sulle rotte dell'espansione commerciale inglese, mosso dalla stessa irrequietezza che tanti anni prima lo aveva reso sordo alle sagge raccomandazioni del padre.Qui ricomposto, il grande affresco di Robinson si arricchisce per la prima volta anche della traduzione italiana delle Serie riflessioni, in cui lo stesso personaggio rievoca e commenta, in chiave, morale, alcuni episodi delle avventure per illuderci, ancora una volta, dell'autenticità della sua narrazione.

Defoe acreditava profundamente na reencarnação e escreveu estes Contos de Fantasmas baseado em entrevistas ou relatos conhecidos. Segundo ele, os episódios aqui relacionados – com exceção dos que estão agrupados sob o título de "Falsos fantasmas" – são todos verdadeiros e, em alguns deles, ele estaria disposta a ir em juízo, levando testemunhas e provas concretas. "A aparição da senhora Veal" é um dos exemplos.

Jeho touha po dobrodružství ho přiměje bez rozloučení s rodiči opustit rodnou zemi a vydat se do cizích krajů. Během následu-jících pěti let poznává mnoho míst a lidí, ale především sám sebe. Zažije několik nebezpečných situací na moři i na pevnině, a tak si začíná pohrávat s myšlenkou, že se usadí. Ale jeho dobrodružná povaha ho ještě jednou přiměje nasednout na loď. Tentokrát má však ztroskotání lodi katastrofální následky a Robinson se jako jediný z posádky zachrání na zdánlivě opuštěném ostrově. Je možné, aby v takové situaci člověk sám přežil?
