Discourse markers constitute an important part of linguistic communication, and research on this phenomenon has been a thriving field of study over the past three decades. However, a problem that has plagued this research is that these markers exhibit a number of structural characteristics that are hard to interpret based on existing methodologies, such as grammaticalization. This study argues that it is possible to explain such characteristics in a meaningful way. It presents a cross-linguistic survey of the development of discourse markers, their important role in communication, and their relation to the wider context of sociocultural behaviour, with the goal of explaining their similarities and differences across a typologically wide range of languages. By giving a clear definition of discourse markers, it aims to provide a guide for future research, making it essential reading for students and researchers in linguistics, and anyone interested in exploring this fascinating linguistic phenomenon.

Die ! Xun-Sprache, auch als Sprachfamilie betrachtet, umfasst eine Reihe von Dialekten, die sich von Zentralangola über Nordnamibia bis zum nordwestlichen Botswana erstrecken. Sie gehört zur Khoisan-Sprachfamilie und teilt einige lexikalische und grammatische Formen mit anderen südafrikanischen Khoisan-Sprachen, wobei unklar bleibt, ob diese Ähnlichkeiten auf einen gemeinsamen Ursprung oder Sprachkontakt zurückzuführen sind. Die Verständlichkeit zwischen verschiedenen ! Xun-Sprechern ist gering, und klar definierte Sprachgrenzen existieren nicht. Daher werden 11 bis 15 Dialekte, je nach Quelle, als Teil einer komplexen Sprache betrachtet. Die präsentierten Daten stammen aus (1) der Analyse vorhandener Publikationen und (2) Ergebnissen der Feldforschung in Namibia zwischen 2000 und 2008. Diese Arbeit bietet eine Dialekt-Analyse der ! Xun-Grammatik, was bemerkenswert ist, da für viele Dialekte bisher keine grammatischen Informationen verfügbar sind. Die Autoren behandeln elf Dialekte in elf Kapiteln. Die Methode ist komparativ, sodass Leser spezifische Informationen zu einem Dialekt leicht finden können. Die grammatischen Informationen umfassen sowohl allgemeine Merkmale der ! Xun-Sprache als auch spezifische Merkmale einzelner Dialekte. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Beschreibungen wird hier versucht, alle Varianten des ! Xun in die Analyse einzubeziehen. Bereits erschienen ist ein Wörterbuch zur nordwestlichen Untergruppe des ! Xun.
