Hrotsvita Book order
Hrotsvitha, whose name translates from Old Saxon to "strong voice," was a tenth-century German secular canoness, dramatist, and poet. Her work, composed in Latin, is considered the first extant dramatic writing in Western Europe since antiquity. Demonstrating profound familiarity with Church fathers and classical poets like Virgil and Horace, Hrotsvitha wove elements from the apocryphal gospels into her plays. Her writings form a significant part of the Ottonian Renaissance.
