The »material turn« in science and art has brought the artistic process and the materiality of staging into focus, thereby challenging the paradigm of dance and performance as ephemeral arts. At the same time, digital media have given rise to new forms of materiality, documentation, and archiving. But what is »materiality« in dance and performance? What role do materials play as part of the cultural memory of an ephemeral art? The contributors explore concepts of materiality in dance and performance, the use of materials in artistic practices, and the role of social media in changing perceptions of dance and performance. This volume demonstrates how the focus on materiality shapes contemporary dance and performance art and challenges established concepts in performance and dance research.

Die Stadt – das ist nicht nur der ökonomische, politische, kulturelle und soziale Knotenpunkt, sondern auch der symbolische Ort von Kunst, Kultur, Medien und Sport in der Moderne. Seit den 70er Jahren durchlebt die Stadt einen radikalen wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Umbau: Suburbanisierung, Segregation und soziale Ausgrenzung, Verwahrlosung von Randbezirken und theatrale Gestaltung der Innenstädte – diese und andere komplexe urbane Transformationsprozesse sind nicht nur in Fotografie und Film, in der bildenden Kunst und der Musik dargestellt worden. Auch die szenischen Künste haben in performativen Experimenten und Interventionen alltägliche Augenblicke dieses Umbauprozesses hervorgehoben. Diese ästhetischen Positionen wurden aber bislang kaum kommentiert und reflektiert. Stadt. Szenen ist das erste Buch im deutschsprachigen und angelsächsischen Raum, das sich mit szenischer Kunst im urbanen Kontext auseinander setzt.

Die Autoren hoffen, mit ihren Beiträgen den Blick von Politikern und Wissenschaftlern, Bürokraten und Betroffenen für die Ursachen und das Ausmaß, für die Formen, Folgen und Bekämpfung der Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit zu schärfen. Aus der Verortung der Langzeitarbeitslosen zwischen diskontinuierlichen Erwerbsverläufen und sozialer Selektion ergeben sich folgende soziologische und ökonomische Erklärungsansätze, gesellschaftliche Jugend, politische Radikalität, Alkoholismus und Isolation sowie Konzepte und Erfahrungen bei der Bekämpfung der Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit.
