What happens when musicians make use of ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of pictures result when painters are influenced by music? To be interested in other people’s lives, to follow the unknown, to copy it, to use it in one’s own work—in short, to cross-map between the worlds of music and the visual this is the subject of HYPER! A Journey into Art and Music  curated by Max Dax, the former editor-in-chief of Spex and Electronic Beats . The book will include classic works such as Peter Saville’s ground­-break­ing album cover for New Order’s 1983 ­masterpiece Power, Corruption and Lies , and the narrative, ­minimalist imagery of Emil Schult on which the cover of Kraftwerk’s 1974 album, Autobahn , was based, and Cyprien Gaillard’s acclaimed 3D in­stallation, Night Life , from 2015. The mutual influences between music and art will be illustrated with examples by Albert ­Oehlen and Scooter, ­Thomas Scheibitz and the Melvins, as well as Daniel Blumberg. Photographs and video works by Andrea Stappert, Sven Marquardt, Andreas Gursky, The KLF, Mark Leckey, and Bettina Pousttchi will lend the book a documentary dimension. The book is narratively underpinned by numerous background interviews that Max Dax conducted with the participants in HYPER! over the past thirty years.

Ein Werk von 2008 auf der einen Seite, ein Werk von 1991 auf der anderen. In einer großräumigen Installation, deren Architektur an Werbetafeln erinnert, präsentiert Albert Oehlen seine neuesten Bilder, die Fragmente spanischer Werbeplakate collagieren und übermalen, zusammen mit Bildern von 1991. Der Blick auf das Aktuelle kontrastiert mit der Zeit, als der „postungegenständliche“ Maler sich intensiv mit Abstraktion beschäftigte. Diese Gegenüberstellung erfolgt ohne direkte Konfrontation: Die bunte Welt der Werbung wird künstlerisch entfaltet, während vermeintliche Gegenstände unter der Abstraktion verschwinden. Oehlen betont, dass Emotionen beim Malen seiner neuen Werke nicht im Vordergrund standen. Er beschreibt seine Herangehensweise als nüchtern und analytisch, plant seine Schritte und lässt Unnötiges außen vor. Inspiriert von Francis Picabias Akt-Bildern, reflektiert er über die Freude am Malen und seine Sehnsucht nach einer unmittelbaren Ansprache durch Popkunst. Das Buch setzt die Konzeption der Ausstellung fort und zeigt den Wechselblick über die Jahre, der sowohl die Konsequenz seiner malerischen Handschrift als auch seine künstlerische Neugier offenbart, mit wechselnden Ansätzen sich selbst, das Medium Malerei und den Betrachter herauszufordern.

Das Spex Jahrbuch Album Cover Design 2006 präsentiert die innovativsten und schönsten Plattencover des Jahres 2006. Das Buch liefert quer durch alle Genres und Stile einen umfassenden Überblick über die weltweit besten Gestaltungslösungen und Grafiktrends- von Bonnie„Prince“ Billy bis Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, von Massive Attack bis Sonic Youth. Ausgewählt wurden die Artworks von der Redaktion der Spex, Magazin für Popkultur und den Art Directoren der Berliner Grafikagentur Minus. Zusammengefasst in 16 Kapitel, jeweils versehen mit einem einleitenden Vorwort von einem Spex-Autoren, ist das Jahrbuch Album Cover Design 2006 ein unentbehrliches Nachschlagewerk und zeitgenössischer Kunstband in einem.

The book covers and combines both the personal development of the person Nick Cave and the history of his career. To a large extent, Nick Cave´s biography records and represents an entire generation and its attitudes towards life. The book is meant to depict parts of the puzzle Nick Cave, places them in their chronological biographical context and deals with deeper-going questions. Next to the text passages the book works with approx. 50% visuals - concert, band, back-stage and private photos. A comprehensive collage with newspaper cuttings with as much unpublished photographic material as possible and the artist's drawings which have never before been published shed a completely new unusual light on the person Nick Cave.
