Heinrich Harrer, traveller, explorer and mountaineer led one of the most extraordinary lives of the twentieth century. He famously spent Seven Years in Tibet (made into the film starring Brad Pitt) and was tutor, mentor and a lifelong friend of the Dalai Lama. He made the first ascent of the notorious North Face of the Eiger (told in his book "The White Spider") and summited unclimbed peaks in Alaska, the Himalaya and South America. Harrer, sportovec a cestovatel, se spolu s horolezcem Aufschnaiterem dostal do Tibetu za neobvyklých okolností – cestou z expedice na Nangá Parbat je v Indii zastihla druhá světová válka a oba byli internováni v britském táboře, odkud po dramatickém útěku došli zpola legálně, zpola nazapřenou až do Lhasy. Ani po nedobrovolném odchodu z Tibetu, r. 1951, se Harrer nepřestal o tuto zemi zajímat. Z původního obdivovatele se stal skutečný znalec tibetské problematiky z období posledního, čtrnáctého dalajlamy. V knize Návrat do Tibetu srovnává autor Tibet z prvního pobytu v letech 1944–51 s Tibetem současným, kam se vrátil v osmdesátých letech. Setkává se zde z mnoha starými přáteli, navštěvuje staré kulturní památky, ale nedává se oklamat líbivým turistickým nánosem některých z nich, protože si uvědomuje ztráty tradičního kulturního významu. Sleduje celou linii změn v této oblasti bohužel vesměs v neprospěch země. Přirozená autorita dalajlamy například je nenahraditelná, protože dalajlamové již od 15. stol. představovali v Tibetu vládce země místo dřívějších králů a nynější instituce pančhenlamů je spíše církevní záležitost. Nynější dalajlama emigroval v roce 1959 do Indie. Pančhenlama dosazený na jeho místo nikdy nezískal patřičnou autoritu. Ačkoli H. Harrer není přílišným optimistou stran politické budoucnosti Tibetu, pevně věří na přetrvání tibetské kultury.
