More about the book

The 'Künstlerkreis der Medailleure München' has dedicated the past fifteen years to reviving and redefining traditional medal art. This volume showcases the works of the circle and its artists while also exploring the history of medal art in Munich. Founded by sculptors and medallists from the Munich-Augsburg area, the group includes artists such as Horst Auer, Friedrich Brenner, Wolfgang van Elst, Erich Ott, Hubertus von Pilgrim, Barbara Ruppel, Sonja Seibold, Karl Vezerfi-Clemm, and G. Angelika Wetzel, with the late Reinhart Heinsdorff as its initiator. Over the years, the group has produced a sculptural community project titled 'Turmbau zu Babel' and nine thematic editions that delve into fundamental questions of medal art, such as the tension between two- and three-dimensionality, the impact of medal format on content, and the challenges of portraiture. The catalog presents the complete medal works of each member for the first time and highlights their participation in competitions for German commemorative coins, with approximately 40 percent designed by circle members. This book serves as an essential contribution to the study of coin and medal art in the 20th century.
