"The great German neoclassical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) is one of the pivotal figures in architectural history; his public buildings, palaces, luxurious interiors, and opera sets remain an important influence on architecture today. Schinkel produced almost all of his most famous works -- in effect, creating prototypes for nineteenth century public architecture -- during his 1815-41 tenure at the Prussian state architectural service.
