The Mayor of Casterbridge

Set in mid-1800s Wessex, the story follows Michael Henchard, who, in a drunken state, auctions his wife and daughter at a village fair. Stricken with remorse, he vows to change his life and, eighteen years later, becomes a prosperous and respected man. However, his past continues to haunt him, as his hidden guilt, pride, and volatile temper threaten to undermine his hard-earned success and reputation. The novel explores themes of redemption, the consequences of one's actions, and the struggle between personal ambition and moral integrity.
