More about the book
Born in 1743, Hannah Cowley emerged as a significant playwright in the late 18th century after a late start in her literary career. Following her marriage to Thomas Cowley, she found inspiration to write during a theater visit, leading to her first successful play, "The Runaway," in 1776. Despite facing challenges, including a rivalry with Hannah More, she produced notable works like "The Belle's Stratagem." In 1801, she published her epic poem "The Siege of Acre" before retiring to Tiverton, where she continued to refine her writings until her death in 1809.
