The book explores the transition from a nomadic lifestyle to settled farming in Southeast Europe, a pivotal region between Anatolia and the Aegean to Central Europe, where these changes first occurred in Europe. It begins with a historical overview of the concept of the "Neolithic," deeply rooted in Western cultural history. The author aims to illustrate the complexity of moving from hunting and gathering to agriculture and animal husbandry, highlighting that there is no single process of Neolithization, but rather diverse scenarios across the examined regions.

Der Band basiert auf einer Tagung des Forschungsclusters 1 des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts und umfasst ein Vorwort sowie eine Einleitung zur Neolithisierung des Untersuchungsgebiets. Es folgen fünfzehn Aufsätze, die in drei Kapitel gegliedert sind: “Rahmenbedingungen” [3 Beiträge], “Nordwest- und Westanatolien” [6] und “Südosteuropa” [6]. Die Beiträge behandeln den raschen holozänen Klimawandel im östlichen Mittelmeerraum, die anatolische Perspektive auf die Neolithisierung des Balkans, neolithische Tonstempel und Fundstellen aus dem 7./6. Jahrtausend in Nordwestanatolien. Weitere Themen sind die Neolithisierung der Marmararegion, Forschungen in Ulucak, Izmir, Umweltfaktoren der Siedlung von Ege Gübre, die früheste Siedlungsphase von Çukuriçi Höyük, die Siedlung von Yeşilova Höyük sowie monochrome neolithische Keramik in Südosteuropa. Außerdem werden die präkeramische Phase Griechenlands, das Neolithikum in Mazedonien, Anpassungen der Wildbeuter in den Donauschluchten, frühneolithische Keramik aus Blagotin, Serbien, und die Siedlungsorganisation sowie Architektur in Aşağı Pınar behandelt.
