Matthew Henry was an English non-conformist clergyman. His renowned work, Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708–1710), offers a commentary of a practical and devotional nature rather than a critical one. It encompasses the entirety of the Old Testament along with the Gospels and Acts from the New Testament, focusing on spiritual applications and practical lessons for the reader.

Most evangelical Christians know of Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Bible , but few are as familiar with his A Method for Prayer, with Scripture Expressions Proper to Be Used under Each Head . It is sent out in the confidence that God will continue to honour his own Word, as it is redirected back to him in the form of heartfelt prayer.
This parallel commentary, prepared from the condensed editions of the Matthew Henry, Adam Clarke, and Jamieson/Fausset/Brown works, provides background, word definitions, and inspirational insights and opinions of all passages
"Commentaries presented side by side in parallel columns for easy reference and comparison."--Cover.
Matthew Henry defines practical meekness and shows how valuable it is. He explains Bible verses related to meekness and how Biblical characters exhibited meekness. Meekness "is one of the members of the new man, which we must put on. Put it on as armor, to keep provocations from the heart, and so to defend the vitals." Also "If there be any vindication or avenging necessary, (which infinite Wisdom is the best judge of) he can do it better than we can; therefore "give place unto wrath," that is, to the judgment of God, which is according to truth and equity; make room for him to take the seat, and do not you step in before him." The text is the American Tract Society version.
