Donald Davie

Donald Davie emerged from the industrially scarred landscape of Northern England, a background that instilled in him a profound appreciation for a spare and lean literary style. His mother's deep affection for poetry and her encyclopedic knowledge of verse ignited his lifelong passion for verse. He also cultivated an interest in ecclesiastical architecture, an appreciation that found expression in his own poetry. Raised within the tradition of English Dissent, this spiritual heritage significantly shaped his critical writing, particularly his defense of its rational and intellectual traditions.
