This publication accompanies the first comprehensive presentation of Asta Gröting's project BERLIN FASSADEN. For her exhibition at KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art, Gröting covered the walls and floors with sculptural silicone impressions of Berlin facades marked by bullet holes from the Second World War. These sculptures function like slow-exposure photographs, capturing the history of the facades from the impact of bullets during the war to the present day. Gröting reconstructs these wounds as architectural traces, translating them into abstract images. Dust, dirt, and graffiti enhance the silicone casts, giving the negative imprints a painted effect that embodies trauma and time in a ghostly silicone skin. As Gröting expresses, she aims to look from within these destroyed walls into the world, reflecting her own face. This exhibition catalogue, developed with the artist, highlights the creation of BERLIN FASSADEN by showcasing her original photographs of the bullet-ridden facades alongside images of the casting process. Each facade section is catalogued with its location, dimensions, and date. An essay by Deborah Levy delves into the inner voice of the holes, scars, and histories inscribed on Berlin's architectural surfaces. Exhibition: KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany (10.09.-03.12.2017).
