Tout d'abord Bepy, qui préfère oublier le " clownesque couple " Mussolini-Hitler pour revenir à une scintillante et futile existence dans laquelle les femmes, surtout celles de ses amis, occupent la place centrale. Il ne comprendra jamais pourquoi son fils cadet Teo, doué et séduisant, choisit d'aller vivre " dans ce pays insensé dénommé Israël ". Heureusement son aîné, Luca, s'inscrit dans la lignée paternelle : manteau croisé en cachemire, Porsche Carrera et fréquentation assidue de la business class. Quant à son petit-fils Daniel, le narrateur, issu d'un improbable mariage mixte, il est pris dans un insoluble dilemme : " être juif pour les gentils et gentil pour les juifs ". Handicap auquel viendront s'ajouter sa timidité sexuelle et son incapacité à entreprendre la belle Gaia, dans le tourbillon de la jeunesse dorée romaine. Un roman de " déformation " jubilatoire, où Piperno se livre à une " expérience génétique mêlant la manière américaine de Philip Roth à la syntaxe française de Proust " !

Analýza a interpretace děl italských modernistů: Alberta Cantoniho, Carla Emilia Gaddy, Alberta Moravii, Alda Palazzeschiho, Luigiho Pirandella, Itala Sveva a Federiga Tozziho. Díla uvedených autorů představují pozoruhodný úsek italské románové tvorby do třicátých let dvacátého století, i přes nepříliš příznivé předpoklady daného období. Autorka se ve své práci zaměřila na romány, které mají společný jednotící prvek, jímž je antihrdina, jehož projevy a vývoj sledujeme. Úvodní kapitola je zasvěcena dílu Alberta Cantoniho, který předjímá modernistické pojetí románu, jehož dílo je významným zdrojem pozdější pirandellovské poetiky a tvoří jakýsi modus italského románu na dlouhá desetiletí. Závěrečné kapitoly jsou věnovány vždy jednomu románovému dílu spisovatelů Alda Palazzeschiho, Alberta Moravii a Carla Emilia Gaddy. Tito autoři se pak z pozice modernistů posouvali dále, jejich tvorba spadá i do dalšího období, které však již není předmětem uvedené práce. Vydaná diplomová práce, obhájená na Ústavu románských studií FF UK, se zabývá dílem významného italského modernisty, terstského spisovatele Itala Sveva (1861–1928).

Kniha Zrcadla a masky vychází jako výraz poděkování a pocty hispanistce a komparatistce Anně Houskové. Prof. Anna Housková (* 1948) vystudovala španělštinu v kombinaci s češtinou a tento dvojí základ byl a je určující pro její odbornou i lidskou dráhu. Přestože svým životem a studiem vstoupila do doby, která humanitně zaměřené osobnosti často vedla k sebezáchovnému oddělování života a myšlení a během níž mnozí hledali ve studiu cizích literatur hájemství vnitřní svobody ve vnějšně nesvobodném světě, ona od počátku trvala na propojení toho, co se žije, s tím, co se promýšlí. Témata, jimiž se zabývá, nejsou výsledkem prvoplánových souvztažností ani laciných aktualizací dějin. To, oč jí jde, hledá hlouběji - v reflexi základního zakotvení života a smyslu lidského pobývání na zemi. Na rozdíl od obvyklých sborníků motivovaných životními jubilei se tentokrát všichni přispěvatelé skromně stáhli do role překladatelů a nechali promlouvat zahraniční autory, kteří se v češtině zatím ke slovu nedostali vůbec, nebo jen v omezené míře. A poctou Anně Houskové je i borgesovský titul, který nejenže odkazuje k jejímu oblíbenému tématu, ale je i výsledkem toho, že se ve většině esejů hovoří přímo či nepřímo o sebezrcadlení v druhém nebo o maskování jednoho před druhým či za druhého.
