Josef Breuer was an Austrian physician and physiologist recognized as a principal forerunner of psychoanalysis. His work with a patient, Anna O., led to the discovery of the cathartic method, known as the "talking cure," which was pivotal in the later work of Sigmund Freud. Breuer theorized that neurotic symptoms result from unconscious processes and disappear when these become conscious. Though his collaboration with Freud eventually ended due to theoretical disagreements, Breuer's earlier scientific contributions concerning the respiratory cycle and sense of balance also represent significant physiological advancements.
