A specialist in GM foods and pesticides, biologist Gilles-Éric Seralini has extensively studied their toxicity and health effects. In September 2012, he published a groundbreaking study in a major scientific journal, revealing the detrimental effects of Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller and the GM foods designed to absorb it on liver and kidney health. The study, featuring images of tumor-ridden rats, sparked widespread attention and became a public relations nightmare for Monsanto. In response, the company attempted to suppress the findings by pressuring publishers to retract the study and launching smear campaigns against Seralini and his colleagues. They also disseminated misleading research to counteract the negative publicity. Despite skepticism surrounding these tactics, concrete evidence emerged in 2017 when Monsanto was compelled to release thousands of confidential documents related to a class-action lawsuit from individuals suffering serious illnesses linked to Roundup. The resulting "Monsanto Papers" exposed the company's deliberate cover-up and fraudulent practices. Seralini and Jérôme Douzelet examined these documents and uncovered how Monsanto employed deceitful strategies to evade regulations meant to protect public health, ultimately misleading authorities and the scientific community about the safety of its products.
