Keorapetse Kgositsile

Keorapetse William Kgositsile, known as "Bra Willie," was a South African poet and political activist. He was an influential figure in the African National Congress and later served as South Africa's National Poet Laureate. Kgositsile's extensive study of African-American literature and culture, particularly jazz, deeply informed his work. During his time in exile, he became a central figure among African-American poets, championing an interest in Africa and fostering poetry as a performance art, often reciting in New York City jazz clubs. He is recognized for bridging African poetry with Black poetry in the United States.
