"This is the first communique from the 99 percent. We are occupying Wall Street." With those words, the Occupy Wall Street movement announced its presence to the world. Within just four weeks, the Occupy movement spread across the country and around the globe, and drastically changed the terms of political debate in the US. OWS is the first mass movement to appear in the US during the Internet age. Technically savvy, the Occupiers posted events as they happened, on the Web, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, livestreams, blogs, and other online resources. There were gripping accounts of being in the center of police actions in Boston and New York. There were hopeful pleas for social change. There were energetic calls to action. There were thoughtful descriptions of a new way of political organizing that had never been seen before in the US, revolving around words like "General Assemblies" and "consensus" and "Working Groups." OWS was not only making history--it was writing it as well. This is the story of Occupy Wall Street, in its own words. All proceeds from this book are being donated to the Occupy Wall Street Movement.
Once little more than spectacles for displaying animals in cramped iron-bar cages akin to prison cells, zoos have evolved into conservation centers with naturalistic free-ranging enclosures, educational displays, animal rescue facilities, and captive-breeding for endangered species. The War of 1812 has been mostly forgotten in the US. At the time, it was a war that many thought should not have been waged. It was, however, a major event: it precipitated the American invasion of Canada (and an attempted retaliatory invasion of America by Canada), it led to the capture and burning of the American capitol in Washington DC, and it marks the last time that foreign troops ever entered and fought inside the continental United States (though much of the fighting actually took place in Canada). Yet, it was also a war with an ambiguous end and no clear winner-and the United States of America does not like to celebrate or remember wars it did not win. Over the years, Lenny Flank has visited most of the battlefields and historical sites from the War of 1812, both in the US and in Canada. So at one level, this book is a sort of historical travelogue. But at another level, it is a plea to remember: to consider and preserve the places where history was made, in a war that is today mostly forgotten. Illustrated.
Within its 60,000 square miles, Florida is a natural wonder. It has the only subtropical zones in the continental United States, its shoreline has the only tropical coral reefs, and it has a number of mammals, birds and reptiles that are found nowhere else. This book describes Wild Florida, from its deep geological history to its varied ecological zones to its unique wildlife, ranging from Alligators to Manatees to Air Plants. Illustrated.
In May of 2015, Lenny Flank left his St Petersburg FL apartment, climbed into a campervan, and set out to live on the road. Over the next seven years, he toured most of the continental United States from coast to coast and from border to border. During this time, he journeyed the entire length of Interstate I-75, from Florida to Michigan and everywhere in between. This travelogue is a chronicle of that roadtrip. It reviews just some of the unusual and interesting places and attractions he was able to enjoy visiting, either on I-75 itself or on an easy day trip within a few hours of it, and describes some of their history-everything from national parks to historical sites to museums to odd little sites that only the locals know about. Among them are: Florida's Skunk Ape; a commune founded by a Hollow Earth cu
