Gowanus Canal
The Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, once a natural wetland, became heavily polluted due to industrial use. The Gowanus Canal Sponge Park, designed by architect Susannah Drake, was completed in 2016 to filter polluted water and create green spaces.
