Focusing on sustainable forest management, this project aims to secure ecosystems and biodiversity in the Miombo Woodlands of Western Tanzania while supporting food security and livelihoods. It highlights the significant charcoal consumption in Tanzania, with over 11 million people relying on it, generating substantial market value and employment. However, the unsustainable practices threaten the charcoal supply and contribute to deforestation and climate change, underscoring the need for a comprehensive policy to address these challenges in the region.

The study addresses the alarming rate of deforestation in Tanzania, primarily driven by the rising demand for charcoal as a cooking fuel, particularly in urban areas. It aims to provide empirical data and field experiences related to charcoal production and consumption to inform sustainable practices. Key objectives include examining Tanzania's energy resources, analyzing cooking energy trends, exploring the charcoal value chain for improvement opportunities, and reviewing national policies that support the charcoal sector.
