Joseph C. Grew Books
Joseph Clark Grew was a career American diplomat whose service shaped pivotal moments in U.S. foreign relations. He served as chargé d'affaires in Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian Empire's severance of ties with the United States and later as ambassador to Denmark, Switzerland, and Turkey. His most consequential role was as ambassador to Japan, leading the American diplomatic mission during the tense period leading up to and including the attack on Pearl Harbor and the outbreak of war. Grew's experiences offer a unique perspective on pre-war U.S.-Japan relations and the complexities of diplomacy in crisis.
