Solon Barraclough

Solon Lovett Barraclough was a radical American scholar and a world expert on peasants, land reform, and rural development. He dedicated the most significant part of his career to working in Latin America for the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). There, he spearheaded and intellectually authored land reform programs in the 1960s, supported by the United States as a response to the Cuban revolution. Preferring fieldwork, Barraclough was happiest when out in the countryside conversing with peasants. He was also an able and inspirational administrator, organizing research and training programs in Chile and Mexico, and later for the UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in Geneva.
