An English historian of architecture and gardens, this prolific writer and distinguished scholar made a major contribution to several aspects of garden and architectural history over many years. His greatest achievement, however, was his magisterial biographical dictionary of medieval architects, first published in 1954 and subsequently revised. Based on documentary sources, the work illuminates the English medieval architectural world with gracefully presented facts.
