This British civil servant and colonial administrator is recognized for his work in India and his role in reforming the British civil service. However, his legacy is largely overshadowed by his controversial handling of the Irish Potato Famine. His disparaging remarks about the Irish and lack of remorse for his actions left a lasting and problematic mark on history. Following the famine, he co-founded the Highland and Island Emigration Society, which sponsored the emigration of Scots to Australia.
