William De Morgan was an English potter and designer who, late in life, found success as a popular novelist. A key figure in the British Arts and Crafts Movement and a friend to William Morris, his long, "old-fashioned" novels were surprisingly popular. These works, reminiscent of slower-paced Victorian narratives, achieved a financial success as an author that eluded him as a ceramicist. Though his art pottery is highly valued today, his literary contributions have largely faded from view.
