Johannes Adolph Overbeck was a German archaeologist and art historian renowned for his specialization in Greek mythological art. Although his writings were based on extensive research, they often carried a dry tone, stemming from his preference for scholarly synthesis over firsthand site observation. Overbeck's most significant contributions were made through his lectures, which were exceptionally well-attended and highly regarded. He also enriched the plaster cast collection at Leipzig, compensating for his limited field experience.
