It is 1864. The frontier cavalry has been withdrawn for the War Between the States, and the able men have enlisted, leaving the white and free black families in the valley of the Brazos River very much on their own. The Comanches and Kiowas decide to take the opportunity to rid the land forever of these invaders.

In 1871, Santanta, a Kiowa war chief, boasted at the Kiowa-Comanche Agency that he had led a war party against a wagon train of freighters. When he repeated his boast to General W. T. Sherman, who was on a tour of frontier forts, the order was given for his arrest, along with two other chiefs who were implicated.
