Alexander Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt was a German naturalist and explorer whose quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundations for biogeography. His extensive travels through Latin America between 1799 and 1804 offered a modern scientific perspective on the region for the first time. Humboldt's ambitious five-volume work, Kosmos, attempted to unify the diverse branches of scientific knowledge. He was an early proponent of the idea that continents like South America and Africa were once joined, leaving a lasting impact on scientific understanding.
