Carlo Goldoni

    February 25, 1707 – February 6, 1794

Carlo Osvaldo Goldoni was an Italian playwright and librettist whose works are among Italy's most famous and beloved. His plays are admired for their ingenious mix of wit and honesty, often dramatizing the lives, values, and conflicts of the emerging middle classes. Though he wrote in both French and Italian, his plays make rich use of the Venetian language, regional vernacular, and colloquialisms. Goldoni's legacy lies in his ability to capture the spirit of his time, and his plays remain cherished for their humor and social insights.
