Tao Yuan-ming

Tao Qian, also known as Tao Yuanming, is regarded as the greatest Chinese poet of the Six Dynasties period, bridging the centuries between the Han and Tang dynasties. He is the foremost of China's reclusive poets, celebrated for works that resonate with the theme of countryside solitude and a withdrawal from official life. His poetry champions a simple existence in the country, embracing wine, verse, and farming, while still acknowledging duties like providing for family. Tao's plain, direct style reflects his back-to-basics philosophy and gradually gained renown, influencing later Chinese art, literature, and even the Beat poetry movement.
