Tři skutečné příběhy líčí osudy několika horolezců při výpravách do hor a jejich boj o přežití. V prvním příběhu se setkáváme s horolezeckou výpravou vedenou Colbym Coombsem a jejich výstupem na horu Mount Foraker na Aljašce. Po strhnutí lavinou Coombs zůstává sám a s mnoha zraněními je nucen sestoupit asi z 3720 metrů a vzdorovat zdánlivě nepřekonatelným překážkám. Příběh Scotta Fischera a Eda Viesturse vypráví o výstupu na K2, kde se potýkali s nepříznivými povětrnostními podmínkami, ale i přes zranění a fyzické vyčerpání při sestupu zastavili a pomohli zachránit jiné horolezce.
