Josef Breuer

Josef Breuer was an Austrian physician and physiologist whose work on neurosis laid crucial groundwork for psychoanalysis, earning him recognition as a principal forerunner of the field. He discovered that inducing patients to recall unpleasant past experiences under hypnosis could alleviate hysterical symptoms, leading him to conclude that neurotic symptoms arise from unconscious processes and can disappear once made conscious. This approach, termed the "talking cure," proved pivotal in the early work of Sigmund Freud. Beyond his psychological insights, Breuer also made significant contributions to physiology, including discoveries related to the respiratory cycle and the sense of balance.
