Vyrůstal s rodiči na anglickém venkově a jednou k nim na návštěvu přijel až z daleké Indie strážce hrobu jeho prapradědečka. Tento výjimečný muž mimo jiné ovládal kouzla a předvedl malému Tahirovi, jak se pracuje s iluzemi. Proto se o víc jak dvacet let později autor vydal tohoto kouzelníka hledat a popsal cestu, kterou ušel od počátku studia kouzelnických praktik až po absolutorium náročného kursu u jednoho z nejlepších indických mágů.

Na své cestě, doprovázený místním taxikářem Samsonem, navštíví řadu fascinujících míst v Etiopii, včetně mužského kláštera na vrcholu hory, zřícenin v Gondaru a skalních kostelů v Lalibele. Také se setká s nelegálními doly, kde místní obyvatelé těží zlato, a zažije scénu, která připomíná biblické příběhy. Nejtěžší část cesty ho čeká při výstupu na horu Tullu Wallel, proslulou pověstmi o zlatém pokladu střeženém ďáblem. Shahovo líčení této badatelské cesty kombinuje fakta o současné Etiopii s místními legendami a pověstmi, přičemž humorně i vážně popisuje postavy, které potkal. Jeho převážně faktografické vyprávění je napínavé a vzrušující, srovnatelné s klasickým dílem z roku 1885.
