René Etiemble

    January 26, 1909 – January 7, 2002

Étiemble was an essayist, scholar, novelist, and promoter of Middle Eastern and Asian cultures. Known widely for his sharp literary criticism and daring polemics, his work often carried a derisive tone and some conjectures have been questioned. He spent time teaching in the United States during World War II, later lecturing on French literature in Egypt and France. An interest in the Chinese communist movement led him to collaborate on translations of left-wing Chinese writers. In his later years, he became a vehement defender of human rights, gaining a broad readership for his critique of the anglicization of the French language.
