Fuat Sezgin

    October 24, 1924 – June 30, 2018

This scholar explored the early written sources of Islamic science and literature. His seminal work delves into the history of Arabic writing, uncovering its early origins within the Islamic world. His research challenged prior assumptions, demonstrating that Islamic scholarship drew from written sources dating back to the 7th century, rather than solely oral traditions. He also established a museum showcasing replicas of scientific instruments and apparatus from the Islamic world, and was instrumental in founding museums of Islamic science and technology in Istanbul.
