Ulrich von Hutten

    April 21, 1488 – August 29, 1523

Ulrich von Hutten was a German scholar, poet, and knight whose sharp intellect and critique of the Roman Catholic Church made him a central figure in the Lutheran Reformation. His mastery of Latin earned him recognition as Poet Laureate, highlighting his humanist leanings. His contributions to the "Letters of Obscure Men" are celebrated as some of literature's most masterful sarcasms. Furthermore, his poem "Arminius" established the Germanic chieftain as an enduring symbol of the German character.
