More about the book

This first volume of a comprehensive edition of Immanuel Kant's works in English translation aims to provide translations from the best modern German edition in a uniform format for scholars. The planned fourteen-volume set will encompass all of Kant's published writings and a selection of unpublished works, including the Opus postumum, Nachlass, lectures, and correspondence. This volume features eleven essays representing Kant's theoretical, pre-critical writings from 1755 to 1770, with several pieces newly translated into English and others previously unavailable. The essays explore diverse topics such as the compatibility of science and faith, the perfection of the world, the existence of God, causality, the mind's role in nature, the relationship between geometry and reality, and the nature of space and time. They also address the methods of mathematics versus metaphysics, the origins of metaphysical concepts, and the limits of metaphysical knowledge. These writings trace the evolution of Kant's thought leading to the emergence of key tenets of his mature philosophy in 1770, notably the subjectivity of space and time and the phenomena-noumena distinction. The volume includes extensive editorial materials, including a general introduction, individual work introductions, notes, bibliographies, a glossary of key terms, and biographical sketches of figures mentioned by Kant.
