More about the book

A satirical novel which is concerned with the odd, learned conversations and comic adventures of a group of people gathered at a country house party; Mrs. Wimbush, the hostess who believes in spiritualism; Mr. Wimbush, the host who reads aloud portions of his absurd history of his house, Crome; Mr. Scogan, who is planning a "Rational State" much like the one Huxley describes in Brave new world; and other eccentrics. The central character is Denis Stone, an ineffectual young poet whose banal verse is included in the novel. His one decisive action takes him away from the woman (Ann, the host's niece) he shyly and secretly loves. There is no action - only talk and the formless fabric of the story is somehow held together by poor lovable Denis
