Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, a group from the Baltimore Gun Club embarks on an ambitious project to create a cannon that can launch a projectile to the Moon. The narrative follows Impey Barbicane, the Gun Club's president, his rival turned ally Captain Nicholl, and the French scientist Michel Ardan as they journey inside the cannonball. The adventure continues in the sequel, Autour de la Lune, published four years later, expanding on their extraordinary lunar expedition.
