Set in 1953 Los Angeles, the story follows British journalist John Russell, who has distanced himself from espionage after a deal with a Soviet official. Living a comfortable life with his wife Effi and adopted daughter Rosa, Russell's world is disrupted when he becomes aware of being followed. As he investigates American companies' ties to Nazi Germany, tensions rise, leading him and Effi to the Berlin Film Festival. There, they confront the political chaos of their past and the lingering dangers of Russell's former life.
