When private investigator Cass Raines hears about the death of Tim Ayers, she agrees to look into it. Ayers was from a wealthy family, and was found dead in a lake near his luxury boat. A post mortem uncovers large quantities of drugs and alcohol in his system, suggesting his death was a suicide. A possibility made stronger when Cass learns that Ayres was terminally ill.
